Anderson Shelters

As part of our World War 2 topic we have been making 'mini' Anderson shelters.  So that these are as realistic as possible we are growing cress on them.  Here is Amelia Elce's - before the cress starts growing.  I will post a finished one later!

Visit to Lincolnshire Life Museum

We had a great day on Thursday when we went to Lincolnshire Life Museum as part of our World War 2 topic.  The majority of children dressed as evacuees and brought an evacuee type lunch - all wrapped up in brown paper!

The museum said we were the best dressed evacuees they had ever had - thanks parents for going the extra mile with this!  The children were fabulously well behaved and very knowledgeable and again this was commented on by the museum staff.

On our way - the school building fits in very well with the topic!

Megan, Isabella and Amy playing the part - note their gas mask boxes and evacuee labels!

Adam, Matthew and Riley - Matthew brought his teddy bear because that's what evacuees did!

Riley, Rory and Joesph - all Year 2's!  Fabulous costumes.  Riley's mum even made him a special WW2 bun for his lunch and Joseph's tank top was hand knitted - just like they used to be!

Golden Time and Gas Masks

As you know we have Golden Time on a Friday afternoon for 30 minutes.  Just because  you are in Y4 doesn't mean that you are too old to dress up!

Here I present cowgirl Serena and pirate Amy!

Conor was the first to finish his gas mask container (ready for our visit to the Lincolnshire Life Museum next week).  All he did was to come to see me to ask if it was indoor break!!!

Super writing!

We have been working on improving our writing this week and Vincent Kearsley Bullen (Y4) wrote this:

'The dreadful vibration from the rain roared like a big scaly dragon.  The sparks, as hot as the sun, melted the crumbly ground.  Flames came as bright as a shimmering chandelier.  I can smell the sadness in the mum's eyes.'

We have also been writing Evacuee postcards to our mothers based on our work woth the book Carrie's War.  Joseph Barnabas (Y3) wrote this:

'Dear Mum,
Mr Evans is letting us help in the shop and the garden is a reasonable size to play in.  I miss you a lot.  We ger nice food.  I feel a bit numb but it's nice down in Wales.  I hope you're OK down in London.  Love Nick'

Excellent wow words from both of them!

New term!

Welcome to Class 2!  We have spent the first few days settling in and getting to know routines and expectations.  The year 2 children have taken to Class 2 in the afternoons like ducks to water!  Our class information letter will be going out next week with details of what we are learning about this term.

Ancient Greek Day

As part of our 'Olympics' topic we held an Ancient Greek day.  Everyone dressed in Ancient Greek costume. We made Greek food - a Greek salad, Baklava, Hummous, a mint and yoghurt dip.  We all tasted it and nobody complained about the garlic!

We made our own headdresses and Greek clay pots.  Before our celebration feast we took part in Ancient Greek Olympic games, including wrestling.  We discovered how difficult it is to wrestle in costume!

We had a fabulous day which we all enjoyed!  Thank you Mr Atter and Mrs Kearsley for organising this.

Our Visit to Whisby Environment Centre

To finish off our term's topic on MiniBeasts we visited Whisby Environment Centre.  We did pond dipping, bug hunting and wild art.  The weather was fabulous which was good because we were outside for much of the day.  We were astounded by the variety of creatures we  discovered particularly the water scorpions and dragonfly larvae.  Andrew found a toad which had its own minibeasts living on his skin!  Mrs Kearsley wasn't too happy when the toad did a whoopsy on her!

Pond Dipping - nobody fell in!

Diamond Jubilee Week

Our final week of term and our learning is based on celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and it culminates in our whole school street party!

We also have our visit to Whisby Outdoor Education Centre on 30th May to finish off our Mini-Beast topic.  We will be going on a Mini-Beast Hunt, pond dipping for Mini-Beasts and taking part in 'Wild Art' - using natural things to create a piece of art.  Please remember - no messy packed lunches, children need water bottles, sun hats and cream.  School uniform is required but the children can wear jeans and trainers.  Please remember to pack a coat - just in case!

There are 5 adults going with the children - Mrs Kearsley, Mr Atter, Mrs Richardson, M
rs Millar and Mrs Cooney.

Sunday 20 May 2012

Our final two weeks of term!  Mr Atter is now the class teacher until the end of the year with Mrs Marshall and Mrs Kearsley working with groups to support their learning.

We have a one week topic on using dictionaries and thesauruses in English.   Our Maths is based on 2D and 3D shape.  We will finish our excellence work in 'Living and Learning  like a champion' and will continue with our Mini-Beast topic which is proving to be a real favourite!  The children have created their own Mini-Beast in design and technology using pneumatics and they will finish and evaluate their creature this week.

This week is largely a 'finishing off' week because next week we celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in the children's learning plus we have a visit to Whisby outdoor education centre to see Mini-Beasts up and large!!!

Whole school testing week

This week is whole school testing week.  Our aim is to make the week as unstressful as possible.  All we want the children to do is to try their best and show us what they have learnt.

Class 2 will have Year 5s with us all week (except for Friday afternoon).  As well as testing we will get out and do some PE (weather permitting!) and the children have their own mini project to complete - on Mini-Beasts.  I don't want the normal mini-beast - I want them to think of something a bit different e.g. a praying mantis!

Monday 7 May 2012

In class 2 this week we begin our new unit of work in English - Dialogue and Plays.  As part of this we will be studying Roald Dahl's book 'The Twits'.  Children love this because it's full of disgusting habits!

Our maths will be multiplying by 10 and 100, problem solving, using inverses and doubling and halving.

We will continue with our Minibeast topic, our guided comprehension work, spellings and so on.  Good presentation will remain very important!

Next week is testing week for the whole school so in Class 2 we will have years 3, 4 and 5 for most of the week.

Class 2 new blog!

We've all got new blogs - watch this space!
